WP5 Counteracting digital exclusion

Work Package 5: Counteracting Digital Exclusion – IT Tools and Resources for Lesser-Used Languages

Lead institutions: Dublin City University (DCU, Ireland) and Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (MPI, Germany)
Supporting institution: University of Warsaw (UW, Poland)

Work Package 5 focuses on improving digital inclusion for Europe’s lesser-used and endangered languages. It examines how technology can help communities strengthen their linguistic presence online and ensure their languages are part of today’s digital world.

The team evaluates existing digital tools, speech and translation technologies, and online resources used by minority language speakers. By working directly with communities, WP5 identifies their technological needs, everyday practices, and challenges in accessing language technologies.

Building on these insights, WP5 develops and promotes user-friendly digital resources, including improved speech-recognition and translation tools, and creates practical guidance for communities and educators on using digital technology for language revitalisation.

The results will be shared through a “technology showcase” event and an open manual for digital language inclusion, helping communities across Europe to access, adapt, and create tools that keep their languages visible and thriving online.

The Work Package is led by Paul Trilsbeek (MPI), with Iker Erdocia and Federico Gaspari (DCU), with support from Univ. of Warsaw.
