Work Package 2 investigates the current situation of endangered and minoritised languages across Europe, focusing on what helps them thrive and what threatens their survival. The team examines how languages are transmitted between generations, how they are used in daily life, and why they are vital to the identity and well-being of their communities.
By combining census data, surveys, and community-based research, WP2 creates a detailed and human-centered picture of linguistic diversity in Europe. It compares official data with local perspectives to understand both governmental and community views on language vitality.
The outcomes will feed into an interactive digital map that visualises where linguistic diversity flourishes or is at risk. The findings will support the design of new strategies for language revitalisation, education, and inclusive policy development.
Prof. Conchúr Ó Giollagáin and Dr. Gòrdan Camshron lead on this work package.
