The Welsh case: Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog
Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog is a community-led network of social enterprises in Gwynedd, Wales, working to build a sustainable local economy rooted in culture, collaboration, and care for people It places the Welsh language at the heart of its identity, treating it not just as a communication tool but as a cornerstone of culture, community, and economic regeneration.
Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog was established in 2008 as an independent community company, emerging from earlier regeneration initiatives in Blaenau Ffestiniog. Its mission is to empower local people to take responsibility for their future by creating opportunities that are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. The organization brings together around 15 diverse enterprises, including a bike park, hotels, a community pub, a broadcast station, health and social care projects, cultural initiatives such as opera, and facilities like swimming pools and playing fields.
This network makes Blaenau Ffestiniog one of the towns in Wales with the highest concentration of social enterprises per capita. By fostering collaboration, shared knowledge, and mutual support, Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog strengthens the community’s voice and resilience. It promotes innovation while remaining deeply connected to local heritage and identity. Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog’s vision is not only to sustain jobs and services but also to nurture creativity, inclusivity, and autonomy for residents.
